Description

Humphreys Yachting World 44 “Firefly” for sale.

This sleek, smart looking yacht with finely drawn lines will be well known to many cruising yachtsmen and women. She was originally commissioned by Andrew Bray, ex Editor of Yachting World and Yachting Monthly and designed by one of the world’s foremost designers, Rob Humphreys. She went on to take part in the ARC in 2000/2001 and her voyages were covered in various articles by Yachting World. Constructed in Cedar Strip/West Epoxy, with Awlgrip painted topsides and teak laid decks, she was designed to be very strong, particularly around the keel and rudder and the bow, where she also has a watertight bulkhead.

Her second (and current) owners purchased her from Andrew Bray in 2008 and having now almost completed their extended World ARC have this to say for her:

“….Firefly has been superb for us. There were many Yachting World articles that suggested that Firefly would be a very special yacht – we can confirm that Rob Humphreys and Andrew Bray did come up with a brilliant fast blue water cruiser, absolutely ideal for short handed sailing….“

“….When on passage we sail along at the same speed as boats like the Discovery 55 and Amel 54. Firefly always arrives days ahead of the 40 footers and this means more time to enjoy life ashore. She keeps sailing in lighter winds when most other yachts are motoring….”

A recent insurance claim has resulted in a brand new Sparcraft rig in 2017, new standing rigging, most new running rigging and a new set of Hood Vectran (top of the range) Premier Offshore sails. She has also been recently Awlgripped and in 2008 received a new teak deck, so she is very much re-fitted in these departments.

With much more recent equipment, and due to finish the World ARC shortly, she will remain in the Caribbean and will be ideally positioned for a new owner to set off on another World ARC.

Full details are in the specification section but her highlights include:

OWNERS COMMENTS:

Firefly is a Yachting World Humphreys 44 that was commissioned by Andrew Bray, ex Editor of Yachting World and Yachting Monthly and designed by one of the world’s foremost designers, Rob Humphreys. Firefly's design, build and first ARC were covered extensively in Yachting World around the time of her completion in 2000.

My wife and I are the second owners and bought her at the end of 2008. At that time she had 10k on the log. We have increased that to 60k and are just coming to the end of an extended World ARC. We left the UK in 2013, started the World ARC in January 2014 and added 2 extra years spending one in NZ and the other in SE Asia. We re-joined the 2016/17 edition of the rally at Cocos Keeling in September 2016 and will be completing the rally in St Lucia on April 8th 2017.

Firefly has been superb for us. There were many Yachting World articles that suggested that Firefly would be a very special yacht – we can confirm that Rob Humphreys and Andrew Bray did come up with a brilliant fast blue water cruiser, absolutely ideal for short handed sailing.

We have sailed in 3 different World ARCs and can confirm there is no other 40 footer that we have come across that is anything like as capable. When on passage we sail along at the same speed as boats like the Discovery 55 and Amel 54. Firefly always arrives days ahead of the other 40 footers and this means more time to enjoy life ashore. She keeps sailing in lighter winds when most other yachts are motoring and can also perform well to windward. Firefly is a lightweight yacht, but was constructed to be very strong particularly around the keel and rudder and at the bow where she also has a watertight bulkhead.

The Hoyt Carbon Jib boom is an exceptional feature. Firefly is self tacking to windward, very powerful on a broad reach when the genoas start flapping on other yachts (as they are behind the mainsail). Running downwind is best of all, the boom flips over easily to provide superb goose winging without needing to go on deck and set a pole. Her fully battened Hood mainsail is powerful but exceptionally easy to reef with the single line reefing system and lazyjacks/stack pack.

Firefly has a larger cockpit, carries more water and more fuel than any other 40 footer. And everything stows below ....including life raft, dinghy, 2 outboards, extra jerry cans of fuel and water......nothing at all on deck except the life buoys. In NZ someone asked us if we were out for a day sail!

We have just had a significant insurance claim. The support we received from our insurer Admiral in the UK, has been exceptionally good. A lot of equipment has been replaced and the following is new; Sparcraft mast, boom, vang, Standing Rigging, Harken jib furler, Hood sails, Raymarine HD radar, Rocnor Anchor and Jon Buoy. The incident was serious but the hull was practically undamaged and completely unaffected structurally.

In August 2016 Firefly was completely repainted (topsides, coachroof and cockpit) with Awlgrip 2000, Snow White, by Prestige Marine in Malaysia. Firefly also benefitted from being re decked by Berthon in 2008 before we purchased her and as a result the teak is very good. Externally with new Awlgrip, recent teak and new spars she looks superb.’

Down below, Firefly is well appointed and comfortable but was purposely specified to be practical at sea unlike some production yachts. The finish is teak with cream painted bulkheads and has the lovely feel of a wooden boat. Cushions are Alcantara in mid blue, there are cream head linings and Corian finished surfaces in the galley, saloon and cabins. The varnish and paint work has just been re done in Grenada.

Firefly has recently completed the passages to Grenada from South Africa, leaving Cape Town on January 7th 2017 and covering over 4000 miles. She is ready to go again and we can assure the future 3rd owners that they will not be disappointed!

THE VESSEL IS LYING:

Completing the World ARC, sailing from Grenada to St Lucia.
Laying up in Grenada, Clarkes Court Marina, end of April 2017

Our understanding is that the boat is exempt from the EU’s Recreational Craft Directive as she was classed as a home build and not placed on the market within 5 years of construction.

She is EU VAT paid but this status can be lost if sold outside of the EU. Reliefs can be obtained and advice should be sought if required.
